Internet Marketing Myth

By Jeffery Wood | November 19, 2009

Note: This was a writing sample I did “on the fly”. They wanted a non-fiction writing sample between 400-600 words. Nothing about what to write about, so I came up with this. Not as thought out as my blog posts…HEY! I heard that!    ;)

Although many people believe that Internet Marketing requires very little effort, it actually is quite a bit work. Though it’s true that any of the internet marketing business models can be put together quickly compared to other business models, what most people are thinking of is after the marketer has gone into what’s commonly called “maintenance mode”.

Maintenance mode is what happens after everything has been put into place and requires far less of the marketer’s time to keep things running smoothly.

In the beginning however, considerable time is spent doing market research, keyword research, finding or creating products, setting up websites, SEO optimization and creating product for those websites.

Autoresponders must be set up, the processes must be tested, and bursts of traffic are driven to the site so that the ads and the landing page can be tested and tweaked to gain optimal results.

Once everything has been set up, a marketer must, well, market their site. This can include writing articles and submitting them to article directories, doing guest posts on blogs that are related to the market, participating in forums, running more ads, making deals with other marketers and anything else the marketer can think of.

Although many people believe that Internet Marketing requires very little effort, it actually is quite a bit work. Though it’s true that any of the internet marketing business models can be put together quickly compared to other business models, what most people are thinking of is after the marketer has gone into what’s commonly called “maintenance mode”.

Maintenance mode is what happens after everything has been put into place and is meeting the marketer’s expectations. The site then requires far less of the marketer’s time to keep things running smoothly.

In the beginning however, considerable time is spent doing market research, keyword research, finding or creating products, setting up the website or blog, doing SEO (which stands for Search Engine Optimization) and adding thank you pages and upsells or one time offers for that website.

Autoresponders must be set up, the follow up sequence of messages must be written, the processes must be tested, and bursts of traffic are driven to the site so that the ads and the landing page can be tested and tweaked to gain optimal results.

Once everything has been set up, a marketer must, well, market their site. This can include writing articles and submitting them to article directories, doing guest posts on blogs that are related to the market, participating in forums, running more ads, making deals with other marketers and anything else the marketer can think of.

This process is repeated over and over again. A marketer may choose to outsource the writing to ghost writers or they may choose to do it themselves.

Once the site has gone into maintenance mode, these things are still done, but on a much smaller scale unless the marketer chooses otherwise. For example, instead of writing three articles a day every day for a couple of weeks and posting them to multiple sites, a marketer may write one a day or even one a week.

They will continue to provide content on the site and contribute to other people’s sites in order to create more backlinks to their site. This will help them rise in the search engine rankings (if done properly), but now the marketer can focus the bulk of their time on setting up another site.

A marketer may duplicate that business model in another chosen market, or they may decide to use a completely different model for their next site.

All that being said, it’s not hard work, but in the initial stages it’s very time consuming work. One of the advantages, and what lures many people into internet marketing, is the ability of the marketer to choose when and where they work.

They may work at home in their pajamas all hours of the night, or down at the local coffee shop. They can work a couple of hours a day and take longer to get things going or they can do a marathon and get large chunks of it done in a couple of sittings.

It’s that freedom that people think of and they call it “easy money” because it appears to the outsider that a marketer is just plucking money out of the air. But it is work, and it is a real business and a smart marketer treats it that way.

Of course…it’s still better than punching someone else’s time clock.
