Targeted Traffic From Craigslist

By Jeffery Wood | December 22, 2009

Getting traffic from Craigslist is a strategy taught from long ago.  But how do you get traffic from Craigslist without violating their terms of service?  And just as importantly, how do you get targeted traffic from Craigslist?

A couple of friends of mine, Janet and Andy, wrote an e-book detailing how they do it.  Yours truly (me) not only got to write the introduction to it, but I did some editing and compiled it into a pdf for them.  Do any of you have a portable ebook reader like the Kindle DX?  Just curious.

In any case, the e-book is free and I have taken the easy way out for this post by putting my award winning introduction (don’t I wish) here.  So without further ado, here’s my introduction to “Targeted Traffic From Craigslist”:

Ah Craigslist, once heralded as the Golden Mecca of instant traffic. Just post your ad and they will come. So I did and guess what? They didn’t come. So I put up another ad, and my ad got flagged. Being fairly naïve, I asked why in one of their forums.

I got very useful tips on why my ad was flagged. Such things like, “Because it’s a no-no, shame on you.” or “That kind of stuff doesn’t belong here”. Deciding that I didn’t care what they thought, I kept asking until finally someone gave me the answer.

When I signed up for Craigslist, I did what many people do and clicked on the button that said I agreed to the Terms and Conditions. And I also did what many people do, I didn’t bother reading them first. I mean after all, I wasn’t going to be posting anything illegal, unethical, or immoral so what did I have to worry about, right? Wrong.

The Terms and Conditions spelled out that the ads were for local listings only. So for my e-book, it was available to anyone, anywhere, anytime and that was the problem. Had I been selling something from my store on the internet where someone could come into the shop and buy it, that would have been okay.

Well I haven’t returned to Craigslist since, but my friends Andy and Janet are very successful at using Craigslist to generate traffic to their websites. How? Well I can tell you it wasn’t by finding a loophole. It wasn’t by “working the system”. It was simply by giving Craigslist what they wanted and this report will show you how to duplicate those results.

Submit your site to all the major web directories. This will generate traffic directly from the directories themselves and will also help to improve your link popularity. That helps you win on Google!

That’s helpful, but that won’t get you targeted traffic. In the case of getting targeted traffic from Craigslist, it will get you local traffic from your town or nearby towns.

Your website doesn’t have to be geared towards local traffic with the exception of what you set up for Craigslist.
